The Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office announced today that Commonwealth’s Attorney Harvey Bryant was selected for the prestigious Robert F. Horan, Jr. Outstanding Service Award by the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys. The award was presented at the conclusion of the 70th annual meeting of the association Saturday night, August 1st at the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach.

The Horan award is the highest honor the association bestows on its members and is awarded for “Outstanding and Dedicated Service to the Association, to the Citizens, and to the Commonwealth’s Attorneys of Virginia.” Bryant is the 20th recipient of the award.

Bryant has been a prosecutor 28 out of 35 years of his legal career. He was first asked to be an instructor at the association’s annual meeting in 1977. Since becoming Commonwealth’s Attorney in 2000, Bryant has served the association as a board member representing the second congressional district for 9 years, as secretary-treasurer, vice-president, and from 2006-2008, president. He has presented instruction at association conferences on several occasions, and serves on several subcommittees of the association.

“I am humbled and honored to receive an award named for one of the nation’s finest prosecutors, who has been recognized as such by the National College of District Attorneys. It was a thrill to have Bob Horan there for the presentation,” Bryant said. “I want to thank my wife Donna and my fantastic office staff who have helped me immensely in my efforts to serve the association and our citizens. I also want to thank my Lord for giving me the strength, courage and wisdom needed to lead the great prosecutors across this state in what is truly an adversarial system of justice. We fight on behalf of public safety on a variety of battlegrounds,” Bryant said.

The Horan award is named for the long-time legendary Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney who retired at the end of 2007 after 40 years of service.

During the 2 ½ day annual meeting, Bryant was also re-elected to represent the second congressional district on the association’s board of directors and to represent the second congressional district on the board of directors of the Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ Services Council, a state agency charged with the training of prosecutors. Bryant also serves on the association’s Staffing Standards Committee and on the Audit Committee. He is regularly asked to represent the association a week at a time at each session of the Virginia General Assembly.
