Grand Jury Returns 123 Indictments: High Number of Welfare Fraud Charges

Release Date: Monday, April 5, 2010 2:30 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced that a grand jury meeting in Virginia Beach Circuit Court today returned indictments against 102 individuals charging 283 offenses.

Of the indictments presented, 19 involved welfare fraud. “My office is committed to prosecuting welfare fraud. It’s deplorable when individuals take advantage of a system in place for families who truly need assistance. I would encourage the citizens of Virginia Beach to report suspected welfare fraud to Social Services by calling 757-437-3200 and speaking with a Fraud Investigator,” Bryant said.
