Commonwealth’s Attorney and City Councilman Address Distracted Driving Issues at Ocean Lakes High School

Release Date: Thursday, April 29, 2010 4 p.m.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office announced today that Commonwealth’s Attorney Harvey Bryant and City Councilman John Uhrin took part in Distracted Driver Awareness Day at Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach yesterday morning. The program was sponsored by Geico Insurance Company, which is also an educational partner with Ocean Lakes High School. In addition to remarks by Councilman Uhrin and Commonwealth’s Attorney Harvey Bryant, the program included the remarks and experiences of Denise Baylous who pilots the Nightengale helicopter. The program included a video of a real-life incident in which a distracted driver caused the death of two other people, and received active jail time. The video included remarks and interviews with surviving family members as well as the parents of the 19 year old who was sent to jail for his actions.

“What each of us hoped to accomplish in our own way and from our own perspectives on distracted driving, was to help our students ‘focus on focusing’ while driving,” said Bryant. All of us are subject to being distracted by a variety of things. The speakers addressed not only things that cause drivers to be distracted but also emphasized defensive driving by pointing out that we all need to be aware of the driving of others around us. “We are all trying to keep our students from hurting or killing themselves or others. If we were able to accomplish that today, then it was well worth the time the school gave us to do this,” Bryant added.
