Commonwealth vs. Cary; Judge Sentences 25 Years for Stabbing Death

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Darron Marques Cary, 24 years old, previously residing in the 4900 block of Century Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia, was sentenced today on one (1) count of 2nd Degree Murder. The Honorable H. Thomas Padrick presided over the hearing and sentenced Cary to twenty-five (25) years in the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on May 28, 2009, the victim, Bryant Leary and the suspect Darron Cary got into a physical altercation. The altercation took place in front of the Abbey Road Restaurant, located on 22nd Street, between Pacific Avenue and Atlantic Avenue.

During the fight, the suspect stabbed the victim three times in the left side of the chest and once in the left hand. The suspect was observed throwing a knife on top of an oceanfront store.

The suspect was detained on 23rd Street and was transported to the Detective Bureau where he admitted to stabbing the victim. The victim was transported to Virginia Beach General Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. On June 1, 2009, the victim died as a result of his injuries. On March 16, 2010 a Virginia Beach jury found the defendant guilty and recommended the 25 year sentence that was imposed by Judge Padrick today.

Mr. Cary was previously convicted of: Petit Larceny, Disorderly Conduct, Use of Abusive Language, Open Container and Littering in Virginia Beach.
