Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Maurice Wilcox, 49 years old, was found guilty by a jury on three (3) counts of Robbery, The Honorable A. Bonwill Shockley presided over the trial. The jury recommended that the defendant be sentenced to twenty-one (21) years in the Virginia Department of Corrections. The formal sentencing will take place on March 23, 2010.
The Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on September 22, 2008, the defendant entered the Wachovia Bank located in College Park Square. Wearing a hat, sunglasses and gloves, the defendant approached the teller window and told the tellers that he didn’t want to have to shoot anyone and to fill the bags that he handed to them. Once the bags were full, the suspect fled. However, he was observed driving away and the witness was able to get the make, model and license plate of the car. The license plates were titled in the name of Maurice Wilcox. Video surveillance captured the crime, showing Wilcox as the perpetrator.
On September 23, 2008, Wilcox attempted to enter the Monarch Bank on Providence Road. The teller recognized his description from news reports and would not allow him to enter the building. The teller told him to use the drive through, and contacted the police. When the responding officers, located Wilcox, he was in the same car described on September 22nd and the car contained the sunglasses, gloves, hat and money, stained with red dye from the Wachovia robbery.
