Commonwealth v. Vaughan; 20 Year Old Sentenced to 18 Years for Home Invasion While Children Were Home Alone

Release Date: Monday, August 24, 2009 4 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach announced today that Michael Vaughan, 20-years-old of the 4100 block of Sassafras Court in Virginia Beach was sentenced on Monday, August 24, 2009, by the Honorable Joseph A. Canada, Jr. to sixty-three (63) years imprisonment in the Virginia State Penitentiary, all suspended but eighteen (18) years to serve, for the crimes of Robbery, Conspiracy, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and Statutory Burglary. Michael Vaughan had previously pleaded guilty on March 16, 2009.

The Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on July 1, 2008, Vaughan, during the mid-afternoon, knocked on the front door of an apartment where a young 12 year old victim and his 7 year old sister were home alone. Vaughan and another male forced their way into the apartment while armed with a handgun. The victim woke up his sister and they hid under the bed in the master bedroom. The male victim called 911 from his cell phone. As he remained on the phone, Vaughan and the other male ransacked the master bedroom and took several items including U.S.Currency and a laptop computer. As Vaughan and the other male were exiting the master bedroom, one of them said “the mattress”. Vaughan lifted the mattress and took a black Hi-point .380 semi-automatic pistol. Vaughan then lifted the box-spring and that is when he and the victims saw each other. Vaughan put the gun to the male victim’s head and took his cell phone. Vaughan and the other male fled the scene through the same window the entry was made. The young boy was able to identify Vaughan because Vaughan lives near the apartment and frequents the neighborhood park.

Associate Commonwealth’s Attorney Eleanor J. Gaines prosecuted this case. If additional information is desired please call Julie L. Pickell (757) 385-8545.
