Release Date: Tuesday, September 1, 2009 5:30 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Sean Bava Massey, 20 years old, previously residing in the 5500 Block of Society Court in Virginia Beach, was formally sentenced today in the Virginia Beach Circuit Court. On July 8, 2009 a jury found the defendant guilty of one count of Robbery, two counts of Using a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, one Count of Conspiracy, one count of Wearing a Mask in Public, and one count of Malicious Wounding and set his sentence at a total of 110 year in the Virginia Department of Corrections. Judge H. Thomas Padrick followed the jury’s recommendation and sentenced the defendant to serve 110 years.

At the jury trial, the Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on April 26, 2007, the defendant and his co-conspirator, Dominique D.J. Hobbs robbed a juvenile near the Windsor Oaks section of Virginia Beach. Hobbs attempted to knock the victim to the ground but was unsuccessful. As the victim was attempting to flee, Massey shot him in the back of the leg with a shotgun. The victim eventually dropped to the ground and his “pockets were run.” Hobbs and Massey ended up robbing the victim of an IPOD and 67cents.

On November 12, 2008, a separate jury found the defendant guilty of three (3) counts of Robbery, one (1) count of Attempted Robbery, four (4) counts of Using a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, two (2) counts of Conspiracy, and two (2) counts of Wearing a Mask in Public, and set his sentence at a total of seventy-eight (78) years, twenty-four (24) months in the Virginia Department of Corrections. Judge A. Joseph Canada followed the jury’s recommendation and sentenced the defendant to serve seventy-eight (78) years, twenty-four (24) months.

Massey previously pleaded guilty to charges stemming from similar robberies that took place in the Virginia Beach Town Center area on December 7, 2007. These charges included: two (2) counts of Abduction, two (2) counts of Robbery, two (2) counts of Using a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, one (1) count of Attempted Carjacking, one (1) count of Conspiracy, and one (1) count of Wearing a Mask in Public. Judge Canada sentenced the defendant on these charges to a term of sixty-one (61) years to run concurrent with his other sentence.
