Release Date: Monday, April 26, 2010 5 p.m.
Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Adrian Lee-Anthony Riden, age 22, previously residing in the 2100 block of Shady Lane, in Chesapeake, Virginia pled guilty and was sentenced today by Judge William R. O’Brien on two (2) counts of Robbery, two (2) counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Conspiracy to Commit Burglary, Burglary of a Residence, and two (2) counts of Abduction. Judge O’Brien ordered the defendant to serve a total of fifty-one (51) years in the Virginia Department of Corrections. Forty-one (41) years of that sentence were suspended on the condition that Riden be of good behavior for forty-one (41) years from the time of his release, be on indefinite supervised probation, and have no contact with the victims in this case.
Had this matter gone to trial, the Commonwealth’s evidence would show that on October 16, 2009, the victims were in their home located in The Reserve in Virginia Beach, Virginia. When the adult victim opened the front door, she was met by a black male who entered into the residence, pointed a gun at her, and demanded that she gather up her children (ages 19, 12, and 7). The oldest child heard the commotion and dialed 911 immediately. The mother and her children were forced into a closet at gunpoint, while other individuals were downstairs going through items. The suspect holding a gun to the victims’ heads demanded to know where the money was. Sirens could be heard inside the house, and the suspects fled.
Riden was taken into custody outside of his residence, and had the victim’s I-phone in his possession. He confessed his involvement. When the defendants were in the car traveling around town, he mentioned that the victims’ home would score them some “quick cash.” He provided directions to the driver of the car. Riden had been to the victim’s home with his uncle who was conducting business there. He was the only individual who did not enter the house, as he claimed he would be recognized.
The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Kari A. Kopnicky. Please call Julie Pickell at (757) 385-8545, if additional information is desired.
