Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that James Letrone Pope, 23 years old, previously residing in the 3500 block of Mangrove Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia, was sentenced today by Circuit Court Judge Stephen C. Mahan to a total of fifty-eight (58) years in the Virginia Department of Corrections for Abduction, Conspiracy, Burglary, Robbery and four (4) counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. Forty (40) years of Pope’s sentence was suspended conditioned upon forty (40) years good behavior and indefinite supervised probation leaving eighteen (18) years to serve.
At the trial on October 7, 2009, the Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on the evening of November 19, 2008, the 69-year- old victim and her 66-year-old brother had retired for the evening. Co-defendants Jeremy Robinson, Jermaine Ford and Germiel Jacobs kicked in the front door of their home wearing masks and armed with handguns. While holding a gun to the victims’ heads, the intruders demanded money from them. After ransacking the home and taking a wallet and cell phone, the victims heard someone say, “Let’s go, we got the wrong house”. Before leaving, one of the victims was hit in the head with a handgun. When co-defendants Robinson, Ford and Jacobs exited the home, James Pope was waiting for them in the parking lot, behind the wheel of the getaway car. They entered the car and sped away.
Robinson was sentenced on September 19, 2009 to a total of fifty-five (55) years in the Virginia Penitentiary with forty-four (44) years suspended conditioned upon forty (40) years good behavior and indefinite supervised probation leaving eleven (11) years to serve.
Ford was sentenced on March 23, 2010 to a total of forty-six (46) years in the Virginia Penitentiary with thirty-one (31) years suspended conditioned upon thirty-one (31) years good behavior and indefinite supervised probation leaving fifteen (15) years to serve.
Jacobs was sentenced on March 23, 2010 to a total of thirty-six (36) years in the Virginia Penitentiary with twenty-six (26) years suspended conditioned upon twenty-six (26) years good behavior and indefinite supervised probation leaving (10) years to serve.
