Commonwealth v. Patterson; Armed Robbery of Drug Dealers Bring 15 Years to Serve

Release Date: Tuesday, July 21, 2009 5 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Quadair Malik Patterson, 21 years old, previously residing in the 5100 block of Rugby Road in Virginia Beach, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge William R. O’Brien to a total of eighty-one (81) years to serve in the Virginia State Penitentiary for three (3) counts of Armed Robbery, three (3) counts of the Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, one (1) count of Armed Burglary, and one (1) count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony. Sixty-six (66) years were suspended, leaving a remainder of fifteen (15) years to serve.

At the trial, the Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on November 2, 2008, three victims residing in the 6100 block of Blacksmith Court in the city of Virginia Beach acknowledged they were going to sell marijuana to an individual named Eric. An unknown individual, claiming to be Eric, was let in the apartment. Moments later, 4 others—all wearing masks except Patterson, forced entry into the apartment. One masked individual was armed with a handgun, another used a knife to threaten the victims. One victim was punched and received six (6) stitches to close the wound. The victims had cash, cell phones, and an X-Box gaming system taken by force.

The victims had known Patterson for years, and immediately advised authorities of his identity.

The defendant has a prior criminal record which consists of the following convictions, all in the city of Virginia Beach: 2006 Petit Larceny; 2007 Violation of Probation, Obstruction of Justice, Failure to Appear, and three (3) Felony convictions for Grand Larceny of a Firearm; 2008 Possession of Marijuana. For all of the prior crimes, Patterson was only required to serve 10 days.

Following Patterson’s bench trial, his co-defendant, Phillip Todd Pritchett, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve 8 years.

Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Gordon Ufkes prosecuted the case. Please call Amanda Herman if additional information is desired.
