Commonwealth v. Morgan; 21 Year Old to Serve 48 Years for Murder and Robbery

Release Date: Monday, April 20, 2009 5 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Quentin Racquel Morgan, Jr., 21 years old, previously residing in the 7800 block of Lisa Drive, Norfolk, Virginia, was sentenced today by Circuit Court Judge Patricia L. West to 88 years in the Virginia Department of Corrections on convictions of Murder, Robbery and Use of a Firearm (2 counts). The Court suspended 40 years of the sentence conditioned upon supervised probation and 40 years good behavior upon release from confinement.

The Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on September 6, 2008, the defendant and a co-defendant went to the apartment of the victim, Hunter Abed, under the guise of selling him narcotics. The two intended to rob Mr. Abed, however, and Morgan produced a handgun once inside the residence. When Morgan demanded the victim’s money, a struggle ensued, during which Mr. Abed was shot and killed. Morgan then took his wallet, which had fallen to the floor during the struggle, and turned the gun on the victim’s girlfriend who had awoken during the struggle and was attempting to call 911 on her cell phone. The defendant put the gun to her chest and demanded the phone, which she gave him. He then fled the apartment, getting into his vehicle and driving away. He later told police that he drove home to Norfolk, tossing the wallet and cell phone out the window on the interstate. He kept the money the victim had had in his wallet. A search warrant was executed at the defendant’s home and the gun was recovered. The defendant eventually admitted to his involvement during questioning by police.

Associate Commonwealth’s Attorney Sara R. Chandler and Senior Commonwealth’s Attorney Charles D. Griffith, Jr. prosecuted the case. Please call Amanda Herman if additional information is desired.
