Commonwealth v. Moon; 21 Year Old to Serve 15 Years for Armed Robbery of Mother and Daughter

Release Date: Monday, August 17, 2009 5:00 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Shawn Reginald Moon, 21 years old, previously residing in the 5500 block of Janet Drive, Norfolk, VA, was sentenced today by Circuit Court Judge Patricia West to 50 years for two (2) counts of Robbery and two (2) counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony with all but 15 years suspended.

At the guilty plea, the Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on the evening of January 12, 2009, the victims, who were mother and daughter, were leaving the area to travel to New York. As they were loading up the car in the parking lot of Lake Edward Apartments, the defendant approached them with a handgun and demanded money. When the victims told Moon they had no money, he searched them at gunpoint and took their cell phones, then fled the scene. The victims then went to an apartment and knocked on doors to have someone call the police. Officers on routine patrol observed a car traveling on Baker road coming from the direction of Lake Edward at a high rate of speed without any lights on. When officers stopped the car, they observed that there was a male driver and a male front seat passenger. Moon was in the rear seat. During the traffic stop the officers received information over the radio regarding the robbery and searched the vehicle. In the rear seat the police recovered a loaded revolver. The other two men in the car, Ronnie Hamilton and Daniel Colon-Estrada, each received six month jail sentences for being accessories after the fact.

Associate Commonwealth’s Attorney William F. Monroe prosecuted this case. Please call Julie Pickell if additional information is desired.
