Commonwealth v. Jorge Alberto Fuertes Loredo; Jury Recommends Four Year Sentence for Getaway Driver in Fatal Shooting

Release Date: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 4:45 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach announced today that Jorge Alberto Fuertes Loredo, 31 years old, previously residing in the 900 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard in Virginia Beach, was found guilty yesterday after a six day jury trial of Voluntary Manslaughter and Unlawful Wounding. The jury recommended a sentence of three (3) years for the Voluntary Manslaughter and 12 months with a $2,500 fine for the Unlawful Wounding. The Honorable Les Lilley will formally sentence Loredo on November 15, 2010.

The Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on December 26, 2009, Loredo and a group of people were gathered at a trailer located in the 1100 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard. During a card game, a fight broke out between several people in the trailer. Loredo’s cousin was involved in the fight and said, “Go get the gun.” Upon hearing this, Loredo and a co-defendant left the trailer and returned home to get a gun. With Loredo driving, the two men returned to the trailer and Loredo remained in the car as a co-defendant shot Florentino Martinez-Melendez three times and Modesto Martinez-Melendez once. Florentino Martinez-Melendez died at the scene. Loredo drove as the two men then fled the scene and were quickly apprehended by the Virginia Beach Police in the 1800 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard. The gun used to shoot Florentino and Modesto Martinez-Melendez was found in the vehicle. The co-defendant was also apprehended and is currently awaiting trial.

“Presumably, Loredo will be deported by federal authorities after serving his sentence,” Bryant said.

Associate Commonwealth’s Attorney William F. Monroe and Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Kristin Paulding prosecuted the case. Please contact Macie Pridgen if additional information is desired.
