Release Date: Wednesday, February 4, 2009 5 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Demoine Deshawn Hodges, 19 years old, previously residing in the 1800 block of Auquamarine Drive in the city of Virginia Beach, was sentenced by Judge Patricia L. West to forty (40) years in the Virginia Department of Corrections for two (2) counts of Robbery, two (2) counts of Wearing a Mask in Public, four (4) counts of Conspiracy and four (4) counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. Twenty-two (22) years of the sentence was suspended, leaving the defendant with eighteen (18) years to serve.

The Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on January 7, 2008, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Demoine Hodges and two codefendants entered the Chen’s Garden restaurant on the 3900 block of Salem Lakes. Hodges and a codefendant approached the cashier with handguns and demanded money. On January 18, 2008, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Hodges approached the manager of the China City restaurant on the 3800 block of Princess Anne Road with a gun and demanded a bag the man was carrying. On January 27, 2008, at about 10:30 p.m., Hodges and Jamar Winder entered the Panda Garden restaurant in the 4600 block of Princess Anne Road. Winder ordered egg foo young, drew a gun and demanded money.

On February 1, 2008, at about 8:04 p.m., Hodges was apprehended following a robbery of the Fu Hing restaurant in the 5600 block of Princess Anne Road. Hodges and Winder entered the back door of Fu Hing, while two other people remained in a car parked behind the restaurant. Hodges held a gun on the owner while Winder took money from the register. An observant citizen noticed the unusual activity behind the restaurant and provided a description of the car, which Virginia Beach Police stopped shortly thereafter.

After the defendant was arrested, advised of, and waived his Miranda rights, he confessed to the commission of these offenses.

Senior Commonwealth’s Attorney S. Catherine Dodson and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Edwin S. Booth prosecuted the case. Please call Amanda Herman if additional information is desired.
