Release Date: Monday, September 28, 2009 4:15 p.m.
Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Michael Lee Everage, 41 years old, previously residing in the 8200 block of Carlton Street, Norfolk, VA, was sentenced to serve twenty-five (25) years. Beginning on December 9, 2008, Circuit Court Judge Stephen C. Mahan presided over an (8) eight day jury trial, where the jury found Everage guilty of First Degree Murder and recommended a sentence of twenty-five (25) years. Today, Judge Mahan confirmed the jury’s sentence.
During the jury trial, the Commonwealth’s evidence proved that on February 19, 2007, Michael Everage killed his wife, Robyn Everage, deposited her body on the side of the road on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach close to her Toyota Sequoia and staged a hit and run and scene. Robyn Everage’s vehicle was found on February 20, 2008. The next day, her body was found in the woods about 800 feet from where the car was parked. Further evidence showed that on February 19, 2007, the defendant parked his car that morning at 85th Street and Atlantic Avenue, very close to where the body was recovered, and took a taxi home. Michael Everage was seen on videotape later that day, specifically 4:37 p.m., purchasing firewood at a 7-11 located at 32nd Street and Arctic. The receipt for that purchase was recovered from Everage’s home and corroborates the videotape. After Everage was arrested, he tried to have evidence planted in a neighbor’s vehicle. DNA belonging to the victim was found on the mirror in her car and on the defendant’s shoe found at the house. Packaging for a truck mirror, similar to the mirror found at the scene, was found at his house, underneath a shed.
Everage did not have a prior criminal history.
Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Scott C. Vachris and Associate Commonwealth’s Attorney Tabitha Anderson prosecuted the case. Please call Julie Pickell if additional information is desired.
