Commonwealth v. Epps; 18-Year Old Robber to Serve 12 Years: 3 Children and Mother Forced Into Closet at Gun Point

Release Date: Wednesday, May 5, 2010 6 p.m.

Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Teon Lamontce Epps, age 18 (age 17 at the time of the offense), previously residing in the 2400 block of Wyoming Avenue, in Norfolk, Virginia pled guilty and was sentenced today by Judge H. T. Padrick on two (2) counts of Robbery, two (2) counts of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Conspiracy to Commit Burglary, Armed Burglary of a Residence, and two (2) counts of Abduction. Judge Padrick ordered the defendant to serve a total of thirty-three (33) years in the Virginia Department of Corrections. Twenty-one (21) years of that sentence were suspended on the condition that Epps remain of good behavior for thirty-two (32) years from the time of his release, placed on indefinite supervised probation, and have no contact with the victims or co-defendants in this case. This leaves twelve (12) years for Epps to serve, which was above the sentencing guidelines mid point.

Had this matter gone to trial, the Commonwealth’s evidence would have shown that on October 16, 2009, the victims were in their home located in The Reserve in Virginia Beach, Virginia. When the adult victim opened the front door, she was met by a black male who entered into the residence, pointed a gun at her, and demanded that she gather up her children (ages 19, 12, and 7). The oldest child heard the commotion and dialed 911 immediately. The mother and her children were forced into a closet at gunpoint, while Epps and another individual were downstairs going through items. Epps returned to the closet with the gunman and demanded to know where the money was. Epps took the mother’s wallet from her hands. Sirens could be heard inside the house, and the suspects fled.

Epps was taken into custody after he was found hiding in some bushes a few blocks away. The mother’s cell phone was recovered on the ground near where Epps was found.

The case was prosecuted by Associate Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul J. Powers. Please call Julie Pickell at (757) 385-8545, if additional information is desired.
