Commonwealth’s Attorney Paralegal Selected for National Certification Board

Release Date: Wednesday, July 21, 2010 3:45 p.m.
Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, is pleased to announce that his office’s Paralegal Supervisor, Ms. Jaye Koch, has been selected to serve on the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) Certifying Board. Ms. Koch’s three-year term will be effective from July 2010 through July 2013.

The NALA Certifying Board consists of paralegals, members of the American Bar Association, and educators active in paralegal training. Their responsibilities center on the Certified Legal Assistant/Certified Paralegal (CLA/CP) examination, a voluntary professional credentialing program developed by NALA. The Board maintains the examination by ensuring its questions and structure accurately represent the current work of paralegals. They also grade the essay questions on the examination and formulate recertification policies and administrative rules. The Certifying Board gathers in Tulsa, Oklahoma three times per year, after each CLA/CP examination.

As of June 1, 2010, the Certifying Board has awarded 16,020 Certified Paralegal certifications, including 377 in the state of Virginia. NALA will offer its first computer-based examination this September, a long-time goal of the Certifying Board. “Computer-based testing will be administered in over 200 locations throughout the United States,” Koch said. “This will allow the examination to reach a larger number of paralegals nationwide.”

Ms. Koch, one of 39 Advanced Certified Paralegals in the state of Virginia, has over twenty years of paralegal experience. In addition to her service to NALA, she is a board member of Tidewater Paralegal Association, Local Government Paralegal Association of Virginia, and Legal Administration Advisory at Tidewater Community College, where she earned her paralegal certificate. Ms. Koch is also a member of the paralegal selection committee of Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.

“Ms. Koch constantly demonstrates her dedication to her profession and provides exemplary leadership to the paralegals in this office,” Bryant said. “She has been a member of this office for twenty-eight years, and we are very proud of her accomplishments, including her instruction activities at the national level.”
