Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today his office’s participation in the Official for a Day program. The program provides Virginia Beach high school students the opportunity to shadow city officials in order learn what it means to serve the public. Ocean Lakes High School Senior Becca Keifer shadowed various members of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office staff, allowing her to develop an understanding for how the office and court system function.
After an opening assembly, Miss Keifer received a tour of the Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts. Accompanied by attorneys from various office teams, she observed courtroom practices in Circuit and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts. Miss Keifer also shadowed the Public Information Officer, a paralegal, a legal Investigator, the Prosecution Support Team, and the Victim Witness team. Bryant also accompanied Miss Keifer to a luncheon at the Double Tree Hotel in Virginia Beach.
Miss Keifer is a member of the National Honor Society and serves on the SCA Executive Board and Leadership Workshop staff. She has been a summer volunteer at CHKD and plans to attend VCU and pursue a career as a physician’s assistant. She enjoys running, reading and listening to music.
“I am impressed with the enthusiasm and initiative Miss Keifer demonstrated during her visit to my office,” Bryant said. “Her eagerness to learn and her leadership abilities were evident throughout the day.”
The 26th Annual Official for a Day program is sponsored by the City-Wide Student Cooperative Association of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools. This program is done in recognition of National Student Leadership Week, April 11-17 and Student Leadership Week in Virginia Beach, April 19-24. Throughout the day as student leaders observe city officials and school administrators, they gain an understanding for the duties and responsibilities these officials perform daily.
